Marine Valve Standards Explained

JIS F 7480:1996 and JIS 5K / 10K / 16K Marine Butterfly Valves

For a JIS marine butterfly valve, distinguish the valve product standard, the nominal pressure class and the side-flange connection dimensions. These requirements work together, but they serve different purposes.

01

JIS F 7480:1996 — the marine valve standard

JIS F 7480:1996 is titled Shipbuilding — Rubber seat butterfly valves. The Japanese Standards Association (JSA) describes its scope as rubber-seat butterfly valves used in shipboard piping for water, oil and similar services.

It provides a Japanese marine-industry reference for specifying this type of soft-seated butterfly valve. The applicable edition and any additional vessel or project requirements should still be checked against the original standard and purchase specification.

02

JIS 5K / 10K / 16K — Nominal Pressure Classes

JIS 5K, 10K and 16K are nominal pressure-class designations associated with the flange connection. They are not alternative names for JIS F 7480.

  • Steel pipe flanges: JIS B 2220:2012
  • Cast-iron pipe flanges: JIS B 2239:2013

The applicable standard and dimensional series must be verified for the nominal size, material family and selected pressure class.

03

What Do 5K, 10K and 16K Mean?

For unit-conversion reference, 5, 10 and 16 kgf/cm² correspond to approximately 0.49 MPa, 0.98 MPa and 1.57 MPa, respectively.

These are numerical unit conversions, not guaranteed maximum working pressures for every valve. Allowable pressure depends on the applicable pressure-temperature rating, materials, seat design and manufacturer’s rated limits.

04

Standard compliance is not class approval

Referencing JIS F 7480 does not, by itself, mean that a particular valve has been type-approved or certified by DNV, Lloyd’s Register (LR), Bureau Veritas (BV), CCS or another classification society.

Where required, class approval, surveyor witnessing, material traceability and specific inspection or acceptance criteria must be confirmed separately for the exact valve model and project. JIS F 7400:2015 is the related general JIS reference for marine valve and cock testing and inspection requirements.

Dimensional reference: The Face-to-Face selector below the Flange Class controls compares historical Series 43A/44B dimensions with the Series 46/47/48 base dimensions specified in JIS F 7480:1996, Table 7. ISO and JIS B references are supplementary. Changing this view does not change the selected flange pressure class or actuator mounting dimensions.
JSA lists JIS F 7480:1996 as valid; its catalogue shows a confirmation date of 25 October 2022. “1996” remains the edition year and is not the confirmation date. JSA standard record ↗  ·  JIS B 2220 ↗  ·  JIS B 2239 ↗

Side Flange: The displayed drilling dimensions are nominal values for the selected JIS B 2220:2012 steel-flange pressure class. For cast-iron mating flanges, verify the applicable JIS B 2239:2013 requirements separately. JIS 16K steel-flange data in this table is limited to DN600. DN650–DN1200 requires confirmation of the applicable standard, flange material and project-specific engineering drawing.

Marine Valve Standards & Quality Assurance

JIS F 7400:2015 — Marine Valve Testing & Inspection

JIS F 7480:1996 addresses shipboard rubber-seat butterfly valves, while JIS F 7400:2015 establishes general procedures and acceptance criteria for the inspection of marine valves and cocks. The two standards serve complementary purposes.

Material & Visual Inspection

Verification of material requirements, casting surface condition, valve markings and visible defects.

Dimensional & Assembly Checks

Verification of applicable dimensions, face-to-face tolerances and correct valve assembly.

Pressure & Leakage Testing

Applicable shell pressure and seat leakage tests are performed according to the governing requirements and agreed test criteria.

Non-destructive testing, including MT, PT, RT or UT, is subject to the applicable specification and purchaser requirements. The governing product standard and agreed project criteria determine the applicable inspection scope and acceptance requirements. Third-party witnessing or classification approval should be confirmed separately where required.

Size Range Material Casting Process Customer Advantage
DN50–DN300 Stainless Steel Silica-Sol Investment Casting Fine surface finish, excellent detail reproduction, and good dimensional accuracy.
Carbon Steel Water-Glass Investment Casting DISCONTINUED Historically cost-effective, with a surface finish generally better than conventional sand casting.
DN350–DN1200 Stainless Steel & Carbon Steel Lost-Foam Casting Accommodates complex casting geometries and flexible customization for specific valve designs.
V-Process Casting Can provide good as-cast surface quality and dimensional consistency.

Casting Process Selection: The process is selected according to casting geometry, required non-destructive testing (NDT), and the specific technical requirements of the order.

Special NDT Requirements: For specified MT / RT Level III acceptance requirements, a silica-sol investment casting route is used subject to technical review and the applicable inspection specification.
